At the recent course on Dimensional modelling the question was asked about GIS and BI.

As a former GIS analyst I provided several comments but I forgot one item.

The following link is to an ESRI addon for a client GIS tool called OLAP for ARCgis. It will allow you to connect from the GIS client tool to an OLAP data source (limited number supported).

One of your spatial data sets (a map layer of sales districts for example) can connect to your OLAP sales district dimension based ...

Hi,

I have product Dim, Time Dim and customer Dim tables in Sales data mart and Inventory data mart. These 3 are conformed dimension, but, does it mean that I should not store additional attributes like "product start date" and "product expiry date" in the same PROD_DIM table? should I got for a PROD_DIM history, inorder to maintain the conformed dimension on PROD_DIM?

Thanks,

Hello,

We have the following sales related transaction tables. We are building a dimensional model around this sales module. My questions are on the design of the fact table.

1) Should there be one fact table with the lowest grain data (SalesOrderLineShipmentInventoryDetails) and then build aggregate fact tables for other levels?

or

2) Should there be multiple fact tables. One fact table combining SalesOrderHdr, SalesOrderLine and SalesOrderLineRep. The other fact table having ...

Hello everyone,

I manage an ad hoc reporting environment on a Oracle 10g server in which in many instances users need to report against multiple fact tables (different grain, sharing dimensions). The client tool (Business Objects) builds the tool based on what the user selects (no free hand SQL). A query is generated for each fact table by BO. If a user happens to add a filter based on the results (having clause filter) there is a mismatch in the results across the queries.

Example: ...

I have a client who has BO, MicroStrategy and SAS, and they want to use MS for dashboard, and BO for user reporting. Apart from training and usability issues related to be being on different products, I'm concerned about working from the dashboard (MS or SAS) and drilling into data, and ensuring the detailed reporting is queried the same way as the dashboard summary... An exec looks at the dashboard on MS, and has questions, and then a user goes to BO to pull up a report that provides the answers. ...
