employee dimension - adding extra fields Empty employee dimension - adding extra fields

Hi everyone,

I am creating a dimension table called employees and my client has over 30 entities they acquire over a period of time. So I am pulling employee information from all the entities(over 30). This employee table links with a fact table called activity and this fact table links to the entity. In other words, I can link employee with entity using a fact table. I am thinking I should add a column to the employee table to show the entity belong to just to make it easier for users to report. Is this the right way to think about dimensional model? Please advise and thanks in advance.

Don't know what you mean by 'just to make it easier for users to report'…

If you are using a decent reporting tool it shouldn't make any difference. If they are hand coding SQL, it is cleaner if you stick to the pattern and have them join to the entity dimension.

The problem of having the entity information in two places is it's not clear which one to use.
