Question about using date dimension keys in other dimension tables Empty Question about using date dimension keys in other dimension tables

Post  leadfoot Thu Jul 12, 2012 10:15 am

Hi,

Users are asking for a lot of dates in dimension tables. Is it considered a violation of the no snowflaking rule to put those dates in the dimension tables as keys to the date dimension so they can use all of the cool date dimension logic? For example, a contract dimension with start and end dates of the contract in it.

Thanks

When users want to leverage the date dimension, I normally move the date FK to the fact table. The fact is though, you can easily join to the date dimension from any table using the surrogate key or the date.
