Groupers if dimensional, associated entity is normalized.

An associative entity (aka: fact table, bridge table) is equally useful in a dimensional model to resolve many-to-many relationships (actually the grouper approach uses an associative entity too.)
Not everthing works with groups. For example the relationship between titles and authors and royalty rates is not modeled using groupings.
