Dimensional data modeling CASE tool and DW design practice
Hi all,
what dimensional data modelling CASE tool do you use to describe your Data warehouse design?
Do you use any feature able to "translate" the logical desing in physical design (e.g. "create table" SQL scripts, etc.)?
In your job, do you consider a conceptual design before che logical design(e.g. that described in http://tinyurl.com/ovt9or4) ?
Many thanks for your answers

Re: Dimensional data modeling CASE tool and DW design practice
I've used ERwin and ER-Studio.
For dimensional models, I have found little value in building a logical (or conceptual) model, so I focus purely on the physical model. Both tools will "forward engineer" the model by either creating a SQL script or connecting directly to the database.

ERwin and ER-Studio aren't free. Do you know any free software?

The closest thing to a conceptual model would be the bus matrix. Any spreadsheet will do.
I believe Visio has some rudimentary modeling capabilities. I'm not sure if it will generate DDL.

ngalemmo, so don't you use any case software for your dw design (logical and physical)?

Usually ERWin, it depends on what the client uses. ERStudio and PowerDesigner are other commonly used tools. I was responding to your question about free/low cost tools.

There's another discussion of this subject here:

My post near the bottom has info on using the Excel templates developed by the Kimball Group.
Good luck!
