Modeling Financial Products Empty Modeling Financial Products

We are looking for general information about modeling products for a financial institution. Most information and samples seem to be based on manufacturing or consumer products. Can someone point us to any relevant references and samples for financial products?

Modeling Financial Products Empty I also don't have 'sales' facts

Post  bini Thu May 24, 2012 11:57 am

I am learning about DW and am fed up of only seeing the 'Sales' fact table as an example.
I need to design a DW schema for an IT services company. We don't have 'sales', we have regular monthly invoices for clients, like a subscription charge, and clients log calls with our support desk. I want to be able to compare the monthly revenue with the number of calls logged. I thought Invoices and Calls should be fact tables? But these facts have different granularity:

Invoices cover a service period, measured in months (YYYY-MM to YYYY-MM)
Calls are created at a point in time (YYYY-DD-MM HH:mm:ss)

Typical when applying theory to the "real-world". Someone comes up with one example and then everyone copies it...

No, don't think so. The point of this post is that the example - sales - cannot be used in many situations, and therefore everyone can NOT copy it. Sales facts are not really applicable in service industries.

Have either of you read Kimball's dimensional modeling toolkit? It is loaded with examples for all sorts of industries. You should be able to model virtually any situation after reading the book.

In general you usually have a master dimension for all products containing common attributes and subtype dimensions (same PK) for different types of products with a lot of additional attributes.

Thanks for the clue: Kimball's Dimensional Modeling Toolkit? We did not have that one. We do now.

If you are located in Maui, I am always available for short term consulting engagements as well.
