Country Dimension
Hi,
I have a straight forward type 1 Country dimension with just country code and name. Now we want to capture the origin of the country as well. E.g. czechoslovakia is origin country for Czech republic and Slovakia. What's the best way to handle this? Making this into Type 2 will not help as 2 records are created from 1.

But there is possible scenario of merging as well. East and West Germany merged to become Germany.

Re: Country Dimension
If this is a critical aspect of your data warehouse, then you can represent the political meanderings of nations as a factless fact table.
